Last July, we had the pleasure of visiting the Ettal Abbey (close to Oberammergau) in Germany (within the Alps and close to the border with Austria). We were told by family to stop here to check the place out. It was absolutely gorgeous! It has a large community of monks (roughly 50) and the Abbey is one of the largest Benedictine houses and is a very popular tourist attraction in the area.
I was interested in the architecture (for photography purposes) and the beer! The monastery runs a brewery, a distillery, a bookstore, an art publishing house, a hotel, and a cheese factory. The combination of the beer and a piece of ‘Opera cake’, I was truly in my own version of Heaven.
